Fashion Design History Comes to Life at the Museo Della Moda in Milan

History of fashion design comes alive in the Palazzo Morando, on the Via Sant’Andrea 6, Milan, Italy. This beautiful Renaissance building was restored some years ago, and this work found a frieze of interest on top of the facade. City officials wisely decided to use this space for a Museum of Fashion, which is absolutely necessary in one of the fashion capitals of the world.Palazzo Morando is right in the heart of Milan’s fashion district, near the Via Montenapoleone.Councilman Culture, Massimiliano Finazzer Flory said that instead of being just a museum, space is “a place dedicated to research in the visual design and promoting young and fresh image of Fashion” (press Press Municipality of Milan).

Four interesting shows on the history of fashion design ranging from 1800 right through the history of fashion to the latest urban fashion can be seen in the Palazzo Morando (entrance is free.) On the ground floor is “the thread of dreams, Frette 2010-1860,” which presents an interesting portrait of clothing and textiles created by this maison. The Historical Archive Frette is the world’s largest jacquard textile industry, and the show is particularly interesting for its demonstration of how a fabric of fashion is created, from concept to industrial application. There are many examples of customization, with the emblems, badges and logos for various institutional clients.

On the first floor, there is an exhibition of paintings from the collection of Luigi Beretta, acquired by the City of Milan in 1934, along with the royal garments dating from the 18th to the 20th century. The 22 rooms in this section include an installation of clothing in the establishment of a 18th century aristocratic residence – exactly what was once Palazzo Morando.

The show entitled “Details of fashion. The 1920s and 1930s in the collection Mangiameli” presents a historical collection donated to the City of Milan Mangiameli by sisters Ana, Lucy and Ninni. It consists of accessories, particularly handbags, buckles and brooches, accumulated during the work of the family in the leather goods company founded by his father in 1928.
Lastly, “The Collection Tirelli, costume shop for film and theater” presents the business of dressmaking Tirelli and engulfed their work. This exhibition was curated by Oscar winner Pescucci Gabriella. La maison Tirelli has won eight Oscars for costume, and has received four other nominations. These garments are absolutely spectacular sight and are notable for their historical and philological accuracy.
